5x5, 6x6, 7x5, 9x6 or Frontal? Which Lace Should You Choose?

5x5, 6x6, 7x5, 9x6 or frontal? Our stylists explain which lace suits daily wear, more styling freedom or maximum impact, in plain language.

The OPHAIR Atelier · Updated October 2026

Closure and frontal lace sizes compared, by OPHAIR

Choose a closure for everyday wear, a larger closure (7x5, 7x6 or 9x6, depending on the unit) for more styling freedom with a closure-based fit, and a frontal for events or statement looks that need maximum versatility. Every OPHAIR collection comes in both closure and frontal, all in transparent HD lace.

At a glance

  • Everyday: a closure.
  • Everyday with more styling: a larger closure.
  • Maximum impact: a frontal.
  • The numbers are the lace area in inches: width by depth.
  • All OPHAIR units use transparent HD lace, and some units come with limited-edition laces.

What the lace does, and what the numbers mean

The lace is the part of the wig that creates your hairline and your parting. Hair is hand-tied to a fine mesh, so the parting looks like scalp and the front looks like a hairline.

The numbers tell you the size of that lace area in inches. A 5x5 closure is 5 inches wide and 5 inches deep. A 13x4 frontal runs 13 inches across, ear to ear, and 4 inches back. The bigger the lace, the more places you can part your hair and the more styles you can wear.

Closure: the everyday choice (5x5, 6x6)

A closure sits at the front and top of the head, with enough lace for a middle part and side parts. It is the easiest lace to live with day to day: less lace at the edges, less to maintain, and a secure glueless fit. If you are buying your first wig, start here. Saraï, our First Wig Favorite, is a closure unit.

Larger closure: more parting room, still closure-based (7x5, 7x6, 9x6)

A larger closure gives you a wider area to part and style, and a stronger "wow" at the front, while keeping the ease of a closure construction. It is a beautiful middle ground for women who wear their wig every day but like to change their look.

Frontal: ear to ear for maximum styling (13x4, 13x6)

A frontal covers the whole front of the head, from ear to ear. It lets you part anywhere and style the hair away from your face. It is the choice for events, photos and statement looks. It asks for a little more care at the edges, so it is usually not where we suggest a first-time wearer starts.

Our Stylist Says: "A closure is ideal for everyday wear. Larger lace areas like a 7-inch closure or a 9x6 are great when a client wants more styling flexibility and a stronger wow effect while keeping a closure-based construction. A frontal is best for events, statement looks, or when a client wants maximum versatility and impact."

Three questions to choose your lace

  1. How often will you wear it? Every day points to a closure or a larger closure.
  2. How do you like to style your hair? If you always wear it down with a middle or side part, a closure is enough. If you like to switch parts and styles, go larger.
  3. Is it for an occasion? For an event, photos or a statement look, a frontal gives you the most freedom.

Lace tint: shop your lace tint

All OPHAIR units use transparent HD lace, which blends with most skin tones. To deepen the lace and match your skin exactly, use our Lace Tint Mousse or Lace Tint Spray. Medium and dark brown laces are also available on request through Create your look.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 5x5 closure enough for a middle and side part?

Yes. A 5x5 closure gives you room for a middle part and side parts, which covers most everyday styles.

Can a frontal wig be glueless?

Yes. Every OPHAIR collection comes in frontal as well as closure, built to wear glueless.

Which lace is easier to maintain, closure or frontal?

A closure. There is less lace at the edges, so there is less to protect and maintain.

What is HD lace?

A very fine, transparent lace that blends with the skin, so the hairline and parting look natural.

Can I wear a ponytail with a closure wig?

A closure is made for styles worn down. For high ponytails and styles pulled away from the face, a frontal gives you more freedom.
