Human Hair vs Synthetic Wigs: Which One Is Actually Better for You?
Human hair or synthetic? The honest answer depends on how often you wear your wig. Our stylists explain the trade-offs and what is worth investing in.
The OPHAIR Atelier · Updated October 2026

Neither is better for everyone. Synthetic wigs can suit very occasional or costume wear. Human hair looks more natural, can be heat styled and lasts longer with care. The right choice, and the right level of human hair, depends on how often you wear your wig and what you expect from it.
At a glance
- Choose by how often you wear your wig, not by the most expensive option.
- Occasional wear: an Essence unit can be more than enough.
- Regular and daily wear: higher tiers hold up better over time.
- Heat styling, colour and natural movement are where human hair clearly wins.
The honest answer: it depends on how you wear it
Our Stylist Says: "Premium human hair is not always necessary. If a client only wears a wig once or twice a year, investing in Raw hair may not make sense. For occasional wear, an Essence unit can be more than enough. The best option depends on how often the client wears the wig and what she expects from it."
Synthetic wigs: what they do well, and their limits
Synthetic wigs are made from man-made fibres. They come pre-styled and hold their shape, which makes them practical for a costume or a one-off look. Their limits show quickly with regular wear: most cannot take heat styling, the fibre can look too shiny under some light, it can tangle and frizz with friction, and it is not made to last for years.
Human hair wigs: what you gain
- Natural movement and shine that read as real hair.
- Heat styling: curl it, straighten it, change your look.
- Colour: human hair can be coloured and toned.
- Longevity: with proper care, a quality human hair wig can last for years.

How often do you wear your wig? Match it to a collection
Every OPHAIR wig is human hair. Within our collections, the right tier depends on how you wear your hair:
- A few times a year: Essence. Human virgin hair, lighter in density and more processed than our upper tiers. An accessible way in.
- Regularly: Signature. Home of Saraï, our bestseller.
- Often, with a more luxurious finish: Velvet.
- Almost every day, for the long term: Raw. Our least processed hair, Vietnamese or Indonesian, chosen for longevity. Read raw vs virgin hair to learn more.
What OPHAIR offers, and why
We only work with human hair because our units are made to be worn, styled and kept. Every unit leaves the Atelier cut, styled and ready to wear, in transparent HD lace, with a glueless fit. And we will always tell you honestly when you do not need our most premium hair.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use heat on a synthetic wig?
Most synthetic fibres cannot take heat. Human hair can be heat styled, ideally with a heat protectant.
Is a human hair wig worth it for a beginner?
If you plan to wear it regularly, yes: it looks more natural and is easier to style. Our first wig guide helps you choose.
Can you colour a human hair wig?
Yes. Our Designer units are ready-to-wear units customized by colour or by cut.
Which OPHAIR collection should I choose for occasional wear?
Essence. It is human virgin hair, and for a few wears a year it can be more than enough.
