How Long Does a Human Hair Wig Last? What Actually Determines Its Lifespan
With proper care, a quality human hair wig can last for years. The seven factors that decide its lifespan, and how to make yours last longer.
The OPHAIR Atelier · Updated October 2026

With proper care, a quality human hair wig can last for years. How long yours lasts depends on the quality of the hair, how often you wear it, heat, washing, storage, rotation and maintenance. There is no single number, but there are clear habits that extend it.
At a glance
- Hair quality sets the ceiling. Care decides how close you get to it.
- Seven factors: hair quality, wear frequency, heat, washing, storage, rotation, maintenance.
- The lace often wears before the hair, and it can be replaced.
- Our founder still wears OPHAIR wigs that are about six years old.
The honest answer: it depends, and here is on what
Our Stylist Says: "With proper care, quality wigs can last for years. Our founder still owns OPHAIR wigs that are about six years old. Longevity depends on the quality of the original hair, how often it is worn, heat, washing, storage, rotation and maintenance."
Six years is not a promise for every wig. It is a real example of what is possible when good hair meets good care.
The seven factors that decide lifespan
- Hair quality. Less processed hair, like our Raw, keeps a stronger strand. Read raw vs virgin hair.
- How often you wear it. Every wear adds friction.
- Heat. Use the lowest temperature that works, with a heat protectant.
- Washing. Wash when the hair needs it, gently. Read how often to wash your wig.
- Storage. On a stand, away from heat and humidity, so it keeps its shape.
- Rotation. Two units share the wear. Read can you wear a glueless wig every day.
- Maintenance. Professional refreshes keep the hair and lace in good shape.
Signs your wig needs maintenance, not replacement
- It feels dry, heavy or coated with product.
- It tangles more than usual or no longer holds its style.
- The lace is worn or torn at the front, but the hair is still in good condition.
What can be restored
- Wash and style, and Spa Day: we wash, treat and restyle your unit at our Showroom, or you send it by mail and we send it back.
- Lace replacement: when the lace wears out before the hair, we can replace it. Get a quote on mywig.ophair.ca.
- Reconstruction: rebuilding a unit so it can keep going.
When it is time for a new wig
When the hair itself is very thin, dry or broken throughout and no longer responds to treatment, a new unit is the better investment. That is a good moment to choose a more durable hair, or to add a second unit to your rotation.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a human hair wig last if I wear it every day?
It depends on the hair, your routine and your maintenance. Daily wear adds up quickly, which is why we recommend at least two units in rotation.
How long does a raw hair wig last?
Raw hair is chosen for longevity, but care still decides how long it lasts.
Can you replace the lace on a wig?
Yes. Get a quote on mywig.ophair.ca.
Can I send my wig for maintenance from outside Montréal?
Yes. Send it by mail for a Spa Day: we wash it, restyle it and send it back. Shipping is paid by the client.
