How to Make a Wig Look Natural: The Details That Make the Biggest Difference
Beautiful hair can still look like a wig. The hairline, lace, density, cut and a flat, polished root make the difference. Here is what our stylists look at.
The OPHAIR Atelier · Updated October 2026

A wig looks natural when the customization is finished properly: the hairline, lace, knots, density, cut, parting and styling all work together. That is why OPHAIR wigs arrive ready to wear, so you are not expected to finish that work at home. Below are the seven details that make the biggest difference, and the tools that keep them looking right day after day.
At a glance
- Great hair is the start, not the finish. Customization makes the difference.
- Seven details: hairline, knots, lace tint, density, cut and layers, parting, styling.
- Too much density is one of the most common giveaways.
- A flat, polished root and parting read as real hair. A hot comb is the tool for that.
- "Ready to wear" should mean exactly that.
Why some wigs still look like wigs
Most wigs that look "wiggy" are not made from bad hair. They look that way because the finishing was skipped: a hairline that is too straight, knots that show at the parting, lace that does not match the skin, or simply too much hair. The good news is that every one of those details can be fixed.
Our Stylist Says: "Customization is the biggest difference. A wig can be made from beautiful hair and still look like a wig if the customization is not finished properly. The hairline, lace, density, cut, layers, styling and overall proportions all work together. That is why our wigs arrive ready to wear."
The seven details that make a wig look natural
1. The hairline: grown, not drawn
A real hairline is soft and slightly irregular. A wig hairline that is too dense or too straight gives it away immediately. A well-plucked hairline thins gradually toward the front, the way your own hair does.
2. The knots: invisible at the parting
Each hair is tied to the lace with a tiny knot. Untreated, those knots show as dots along the parting. Treated, the parting looks like scalp.
3. Lace tint: matched to your skin
Every OPHAIR unit uses transparent HD lace, which blends with most skin tones. If you want to deepen the lace to match your skin exactly, our Lace Tint Mousse and Lace Tint Spray add buildable colour.
4. Density: closer to real hair than to a doll
Real hair is not equally thick everywhere. Too much hair, especially around the face and at the parting, is one of the fastest ways to look like a wig. Natural density is the safest choice for everyday wear.
5. Cut and layers: shaped around a face
A wig straight from the factory is one length all over. Layers, face framing and a cut that suits your face shape are what make it look like your hair.
6. The parting: placement and width
A parting that is too wide or perfectly straight looks artificial. A natural parting is slightly soft and sits where your own hair would part.
7. Styling and proportions: flat at the root, movement at the ends
Natural hair lies flat at the root and moves at the ends. A puffy root or a stiff, bulky crown reads as a wig even when everything else is right. This is where a hot comb makes the biggest difference.
The tool for a flat, natural root: a hot comb
A hot comb smooths the hair right at the root, along the hairline and at the parting, where flat irons cannot reach. It is the finishing step our stylists use to make a unit look like it grows from your scalp.
The Sleek Comb is our electric hot comb, made for sleek wig styling:
- A ceramic heating plate that warms up fast.
- Adjustable temperature, so you can use only the heat you need.
- A comb design that reaches the shorter hairs around the hairline and parting.
- Available in pink or black.
How to use a hot comb on your wig

- Prep the hair. Mist with a hydrating, heat-protecting spray, then smooth a little styling cream through the lengths to reduce frizz.
- Start low. Choose the lowest temperature that smooths the hair, and only increase it if you need to.
- Work at the root. Comb slowly from the root outward along the parting and hairline, one small section at a time. Keep the comb on the hair, never on the lace.
- Lock it in. Finish flyaways and baby hairs with our Wax Stick for a sleek, polished root.
The goal of every styling session, whatever the look: a frizz-free result.

What "ready to wear" means at OPHAIR
Every OPHAIR unit leaves the Atelier with the hairline finished, the knots treated, the cut and layers done and the style set, exactly as pictured. You open the box and wear your hair. Our photos are never retouched or reused, so what you see is what you get.
Want something more personal? Our Designer units are ready-to-wear units customized by colour or by cut.
Can you fix a wig that looks unnatural?
Often, yes. At our Showroom, our team can rework a hairline, restyle a unit and refresh it with a wash and style or a Spa Day. Bring your wig in, or send it by mail.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a lace wig look fake?
Usually a combination of a hairline that is too dense or too straight, visible knots, lace that does not match the skin, too much density and a puffy root.
What are bleached knots?
The small knots that tie each hair to the lace, treated so they do not show as dots along the parting.
Do I need a hot comb for a wig?
It is the best tool for a flat, natural root along the parting and hairline. Use the lowest heat that works and keep it off the lace.
Which lace colour should I choose for my skin tone?
Our units use transparent HD lace, which blends with most skin tones. Our Lace Tint Mousse and Spray can deepen it to match your skin exactly.
Does a natural-looking wig need to be low density?
Not low, natural. Density close to real hair looks more believable than a very full unit, especially at the hairline and parting.
